Tim Andrews

I started making bird shacks about 20 years ago because of my love for art and birds. Bird shacks, as opposed to bird houses, because they look like  shacks.  Plus they are similar to shacks as they are made from found objects. In the 90s,  I was known as the "bird shack man of midtown" with articles appearing in The Flyer and Southern Living.

It’s part of the journey to stop in the middle of the street and dig through someone’s discarded wood for materials.  Many people are collectors of birds hacks, including one Memphis resident who has nearly 20 at her Memphis home and Nantucket vacation home. Although many people collect them, they are completely functional as bird houses. They are designed and built with birds in mind including drainage and circulation. Unlike other birdhouses, these are built to last for many years and have roof paper as an added measure.   They also are built with bird friendly non-treated wood.

Each bird shack is a unique piece of art. No two are exactly the same.
