Murrine Blown Glass Artist Scott Garrelts artist statement:
I started working with glass in 2006. I enjoy making various forms, including bowls, vases, and sculptures. One of my favorite techniques is cane working. This ancient method involves creating and arranging thin rods of colored glass. I often weave these rods together in intricate patterns. There are countless ways to use cane.
Another technique I love is murrine, which is similar to cane but thicker and cut into cross-sections. I make all my clear glass from scratch and use a wide range of colors. Many colors come from raw materials. The main ingredients are sand, soda ash, and lime. By creating my own colors, I can produce shades not found elsewhere.
Shaping glass is intense. Everything must happen at the right moment, like a well-choreographed dance. I can’t pause to refresh my coffee. Once I start a piece at 2000 degrees, it must stay above 1000 degrees while I work. If it cools too much, it can crack. Finding the right balance is crucial.
With my glass, I aim to bring joy and enhance your surroundings. Many pieces are also functional.
