Tom Clifton

Mezzo Fresco

Tom Clifton’s Work

About Tom Clifton

Tom Clifton is a Memphis artist. Tom focuses on the fusion of color and texture to create his mezzo fresco works of contemporary art. He creates sculpted plaster pieces on canvas that feature sheer watery acrylics. His colors feel like one hue floats over the other. Thus, creating depth and movement with his paintings.

While his themes vary, they all resonate from his world of discovery. Tom adapted the mezzo fresco process to canvas by utilizing the techniques made popular by 17th century artists. He begins with a plaster base. Then he utilizes sculpting and drying techniques to create the desired appearance. The pigment is then applied to the drying plaster.

Tom, who is a self-taught artist, has been a part of the Memphis art community for more than thirty years. His paintings are a part of many collections in the North America and Japan. His work appeared on HGTV.

He is co-owner of T Clifton Art. His studio is at the gallery in Memphis, Tennessee. The gallery is proudly celebrating 40 years of creativity and craftsmanship.
